How To Clean Slate

For easy maintenance and to prevent unsightly stains, seal slate counter tops and floors with a penetrating commercial stone sealer and reapply it about every six months. Make sure, though, that the product you use is recommended for use with slate because some sealers can cause darkening. Sponge~clean slate counter tops with a solution of mild detergent and warm water, and gently use a plastic scrub pad to remove most stains. Never apply white vinegar or any other acidic cleaner to slate because it can etch the surface.
Go over a slate floor frequently with a dry dust mop to pick up dirt and grime, which can scratch the surface. Vacuum occasionally with the floor nozzle attachment. Mop as necessary with a mild detergent and warm water. Wring the mop so lt’s barely damp because excess water cant deep into pores and lambed dirt and grime. To restore shine to a dull surface, mop the floor With a water-based, sell-polishing wax, or use an electric polisher to apply a coat of solvent-based wax.
